Chemical Reactions as Γ-Limit of Diffusion∗

چکیده
We study the limit of high activation energy of a special Fokker–Planck equation known as the Kramers–Smoluchowski equation (KS). This equation governs the time evolution of the probability density of a particle performing a Brownian motion under the influence of a chemical potential H/ε. We choose H having two wells corresponding to two chemical states A and B. We prove that after a suitable rescaling the solution to the KS converges, in the limit of high activation energy (ε → 0), to the solution of a simpler system modeling the spatial diffusion of A and B combined with the reaction A ! B. With this result we give a rigorous proof of Kramers’s formal derivation, and we show how chemical reactions and diffusion processes can be embedded in a common framework. This allows one to derive a chemical reaction as a singular limit of a diffusion process, thus establishing a connection between two worlds often regarded as separate. The proof rests on two main ingredients. One is the formulation of the two disparate equations as evolution equations for measures. The second is a variational formulation of both equations that allows us to use the tools of variational calculus and, specifically, Γ-convergence.

متن کاملGaussian Approximations for Transition Paths in Molecular Dynamics
This paper is concerned with transition paths within the framework of the overdamped Langevin dynamics model of chemical reactions. We aim to give an efficient description of typical transition paths in the small temperature regime. We adopt a variational point of view and seek the best Gaussian approximation, with respect to Kullback-Leibler divergence, of the non-Gaussian distribution of the ...
متن کاملOn the Early Development of Dispersion in Flow through a Tube with Wall Reactions
This is a study on numerical simulation of the convection-diffusion transport of a chemical species in steady flow through a small-diameter tube, which is lined with a very thin layer made up of retentive and absorptive materials. The species may be subject to a first-order kinetic reversible phase exchange with the wall material and irreversible absorption into the tube wall. Owing to the velo...
متن کاملImmobilized Palladium-pyridine Complex on γ-Fe2O3 Magnetic Nanoparticles as a New Magnetically Recyclable Heterogeneous Catalyst for Heck, Suzuki and Copper-free Sonogashira Reactions
A new immobilized palladium-pyridine complex on γ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles was synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, TGA, ICP, XPS, XRD, FT-IR and CHN analysis. The catalytic activity of synthesized catalyst has been investigated in Heck, Suzuki and Sonogashira coupling reactions using a series of aryl halides. The catalyst was easily isolated from the reaction mixture by an external m...
